The University of Queensland will adopt a greater focus on fund-raising activities, with vice-chancellor Paul Greenfield making the approach a priority. Lynn Meek, director of the LH Martin Institute for Higher Education Leadership and Management, said ‘generally most of the universities are becoming leaner, more efficient and more professional.’ Professor Greenfield appears to be following the precedent set by the man he replaced, John Hay, who retired as UQ’s vice-chancellor in December. Among the relationships he built with philanthropists was an association with Charles Feeney of the United States-based Atlantic Philanthropies, which has invested $US3.8 billion ($4.2 billion) worldwide.
