St. Louis Community College has been chosen to participate in a new three-year program to develop models for innovative programs to reach students over age 50.

The AACC Plus 50 Initiative is being sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).

St. Louis Community College is one of 10 demonstration colleges chosen to participate. The local college system will receive $40,000 over three years for the project, according to a release Thursday from the college. The initiative is funded with a $3.2 million grant from the international Atlantic Philanthropies.

St. Louis Community College will establish and pilot workshops on four campuses to help students over age 50 who are unsure about how to make the next phase of their lives, including retirement, all they hope it can be. Travel study tours, art classes and other topics will be offered in a format for students who aren’t seeking degrees.

The 10 demonstration colleges will be aided by five mentor colleges that already have established programs for students over age 50.

St. Louis Community College is the largest community college district in Missouri and one of the largest in the United States. It has four campuses — Florissant Valley, Forest Park, Meramec and Wildwood.
