HUNDREDS of runners are set to take to the roads around Youghal next Sunday in a bid to raise funds for one of Cork’s best known charities. Youghal Athletic Club and local man Martin Drake have come together to organise a four-mile charity run with all funds raised going to Marymount Hospice. Martin, whose wife Caroline passed away last year, decided to organise the race as a tribute to Caroline and as an opportunity to help the Cork hospice.
The huge crowds that turned out for the official launch of the road run was a reflection of crowds that are due to take part, among them former Olympian and European champion Noel Berkley.
The race gets underway on July 18 at 2pm at Summerfield Cross. It will then make its way through Youghal, turn at the north end of the town, continue back up the quay side and finish by the Front Strand at the old train station.
Money raised from the run will go towards the building of the new hospice which is currently under construction.
Costing EUR52 million, the new facility is located at Ballineaspig Mor in Curraheen.
The new hospice will have a capacity for 44 patients.
Funding for the new facility will come from the HSE who will provide EUR14 million and Atlantic Philanthropies who will contribute EUR10 million.
The balance will come from the sale of the Wellington Road property and the hundreds of fund-raising events that are held annually.
The first patients are due to move there in July 2011.
