Physical Discipline Has No Place in New Mexico’s Schools

In all 50 states it is illegal to hit a prisoner, someone in the military or an animal yet over one third of the school districts in New Mexico still let staff physically discipline (paddle) children.
Experts tell us that physical discipline of students does not help discipline in schools. In fact, it promotes more violence.
Generation Justice and Elev8 New Mexico’s policy and advocacy partner, The New Mexico Center for Law and Poverty, an Atlantic grantee, are some of the many organisations fighting to ensure that the House Bill 172 to ban corporal punishment in New Mexico’s schools is signed into law by Governor Martinez.
