In a Huffington Post article, Nancy Altman and Eric Kingson of Social Security Works, an Atlantic grantee, discuss the important role Social Security played in the aftermath of 9/11.
Social Security benefits have been distributed on a monthly basis for the thousands harmed during the attacks, including children who lost parents, surviving spouses and those who became disabled as the result of 9/11. In the past five years, over $175 million in benefits has been given to these individuals.
The authors write: “The attacks of Sept. 11 reminded us of the importance of family and heightened our appreciation for public services. They also showed the value of the traditional Social Security system — reliable and necessary in an insecure world.”
