Recession and Recovery

Resource type: Research Report

Center for Social Inclusion |

This report, released by the Center for Social Inclusion, ranks impact of the recession on all 50 states and the District of Columbia based on 14 variables including housing, jobs, health, and poverty.

The Center for Social Inclusion is an Atlantic grantee.

The New York Stimulus Alliance will be hosting teach-ins across New York State tomorrow, responding to newly available data tracking stimulus investments. As part of this educational effort the Center for Social Inclusion is offering this report on the recession to date.

CSI’s report, Measuring the Recession: An Impact Index, ranks impact of the recession on all 50 states and the District of Columbia based on 14 variables including housing, jobs, health, and poverty. The report finds communities of color are especially likely to be where the recession’s impact has been deepest. In the coming weeks, we will examine how effective Recovery dollars have been in reaching the hardest hit communities. We will use the first round of data from stimulus reporting to analyze:

  • The quality of the data
  • Where projects are located;
  • Who has received ARRA-funded contracts, grants, and loans.
  • How these findings correlate with data that tell us who is shouldering the greatest burden in the recession.

We will offer findings on national trends and conduct deeper analysis in key locations. Those locations may include KY, NY, MS, AL, SC, LA. We hope this valuable information will help community members, advocates, and policy-makers to direct Recovery Act dollars to communities most impacted- a key goal of the Recovery Act. Please look for these reports.
