Former Supreme Court judge and president of the Law Reform Commission Catherine McGuinness has become a sponsor of the Irish Refugee Council, expressing an interest in promoting comprehensive reform of the asylum system.
“For many years I have watched with concern how the lack of an effective appeals mechanism has placed a heavy burden on the courts,” she said.
“The current asylum system is unnecessarily costly and time consuming. It fails to serve the State, the applicant and the taxpayer. I am pleased to be working with the Irish Refugee Council’s campaign for early reform of the asylum system.”
