Access to Affordable, Quality Health Care Is a Fundamental Human Right
Global
Atlantic worked for many years so that all people, no matter where they live or their socioeconomic status, can access affordable quality healthcare. Much of our grantmaking to achieve health equity concentrated on leadership development—helping to identify, connect and prepare a generation of young leaders committed to driving systemic change in health care systems and practices. To enable this work to continue beyond Atlantic’s years we made several culminating grants in South Africa, Southeast Asia and the United States, where we have been most engaged in this work. They include:
- $45 million for the Atlantic Fellows® for Health Equity in South Africa at Tekano to create, connect and sustain a community of innovators and leaders who will help bridge the gap between rich and poor, and build a healthier nation for all.
- $40 million for the Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity in Southeast Asia program at the Equity Initiative, which seeks to dramatically reduce disparities in health access, quality, and outcomes throughout Southeast Asia.
- $24 million for the Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity program at George Washington University’s Health Workforce Institute to identify, connect and prepare leaders to build more equitable health systems and organizations.
- $14.8 million for a new Center for Consumer Engagement in Health Innovation to serve as a national resource and hub for U.S. consumer advocacy.
- $12.5 million to improve health care financing for patient-centered models that serve vulnerable populations in the United States.
These grants will help develop emerging health leaders, advocates and influencers focused on common solutions, skills and values essential to improving health access, quality and outcomes.
